Needless to say I have purchased all of his books. First of all the music is trully autentic, excellently written and annotated. You will not find such All pieces are beutifull and very melodic. All material is well graded flowing smoothly from one piece to the next.
The materials are not repeated. If you want to learn flamenco, Juan Martin's collection is one to get. Although the book states that no previous guitar knowledge is required, it can be disappointing to the beginners. You need some knowledge with fingerstyle, preferably classical background before you can benifit from this book. It's still not too hard to start from scratch using this book if you have Instructions are clear, musical notation matches the music played on CD exactly.
The tricky thing is that it's sold in two volumes now. I had the book 10 years ago when it was sold as a single book. You can easily finish vol. Although this title is billed as a beginner's introduction to Flamenco, it actually requires prior knowledge of music, chords and an ability to read music. Although these are covered very briefly, it quickly moves into songs that require multiple musical skills.
The title is also quite old in content Even the references are to the accompanying cassette, which is now a CD. On the other hand, it is an excellent source of flamenco music for the guitar. This style of playing has traditionally been learnt without written music, from other guitarists.
Juan Martin brings a discipline to the music style by providing well graded pieces, explanations and above all, music written for the student with an ability to read musical notation. These books represent a thoughtful, no-nonsense approach to teaching a complex and beautiful style of music with a rich history.
Martin is obviously an experienced teacher and comes sans the large ego that often comes with such a level of skill and knowledge -- what a joy! I would suggest This is one of the few methods that really works. You can learn these Flamenco techniques because the method is very carefully edited and well-matched to instruction photos. It helps to have a classical guitar background, but that isn't really necessary since the Flamenco techniques are really different An excellent and well thought out series!
